Assistant Instructor Position
Hi all,
Do any of your municipalities currently have an Assistant Instructor position, or a similar role? If so, could you please provide some feedback or insight on the following with regards to this position:
- What are their duties?
- What are the position requirements? (certifications, age)
- How often are they scheduled? (daily, as needed)
- What is their rate of pay?
- What type of training do they receive? Do they attend the inservice trainings?
- Does this position affect your volunteer recruitment?
- Pro's / Con's of having this position at your municipality?
Any information would be much appreciated!

Re: Assistant Instructor Position
We no longer have this position with the City of Hamilton. We do have a summer position called Wading Pool Attendants and their job is to monitor the wading pools. They can have a minimum of Bronze Medallion and be 14 years of age. They make minimum wage and work somewhere between 24-30 hours per week in the summer. They receive an information training which covers all of our policy and procedures, the mandatory WSIB trainings (WHMIS, AODA, MOL, FITT, etc.) We also do an onsite training where they practice opening and closing the wading pool. The Pros are that we can hire for the summer at a cheaper rate and it does help them gain experience if they apply as a lifeguard. The Cons is that some are very inexperienced and can sometimes be challenged in having to deal with a lot of PR.

Re: Assistant Instructor Position
We do not hire Assistant Instructors in the Town of Milton. We have instead built and promoted our volunteer program in order to have some extra hands to assist with lessons.
